Synopsis

The protagonist, 19 year old Li Xiaoyao, lives in a small fishing village on the east coast of China near present-day Suzhou. Li lost his parents at a young age and was raised by his aunt. When Li’s aunt falls ill, Li embarks on a quest to seek a legendary fairy, who lives on a nearby island, for help. The fairy is called Zhao Ling’er, a 16 year old maiden who lives with her grandmother in a hidden palace on the island. Initially, Zhao is reluctant to help Li, but being an orphan herself as well, she is touched by Li’s pleas and gives him some magical medicine.

Li’s aunt recovers after taking the medicine. However, Li had unknowingly broken the spell concealing the location of the palace during his journey there. Zhao’s enemies break into the palace and kidnap her after a bloody battle. Li finds Zhao and saves her. The duo returns to the palace to save her grandmother but fail to do so. With her dying breath, Zhao’s grandmother reveals that Zhao’s mother may still be alive and entrusts her granddaughter to Li’s care. When they return home, Li’s aunt tells her nephew to take Zhao together with him to find Zhao’s mother. Li and ZHao will propose their marriage formally after they find Zhao’s mother.

Suzhou and Yangzhou

Li Xiaoyao and Zhao Ling’er arrive in Suzhou. They meet Lin Yueru, the spoiled daughter of a wealthy martial artist. Initially, Li and Lin resented each other. Later, Li unexpectedly won Lin’s hand in marriage in a martial arts contest and they were engaged. On the eve of the wedding, Zhao suddenly disappears. Li sets off to find Zhao, with Lin insisting that she accompanies him, much to Lin’s father’s displeasure.

Li learns that Zhao has been imprisoned inside the tower. Both Li and Lin break into the tower to rescue Zhao. They find Zhao after a dangerous descent to the lowest level of the Tower and learn of Zhao’s true identity. However, the tower has no exit and the only way out is to destroy it from the inside. As the tower collapses, the trio is hit by a huge block of stone. Li and Zhao suffer grave injurie

Miao region and the finale

Li Xiaoyao and Zhao Ling’er reach Zhao’s homeland of the Miao region, which has been plagued by a prolonged drought. Li befriends A Nu, the daughter of the White Miao king. The White Miao and the Black Miao are fighting over scarce water resources. Zhao successfully calls for a rainstorm and restores peace with the help of the White Miao queen and several ancient artifacts.
Sasuke Uchiha (うちはサスケ) is a main character in Naruto and is a major dynamic character in the series. Although he started off as one of the main protagonists of the series, as the story went on he become a hero-turned antagonist.

Being the youngest son of Konoha Military Police captain and Uchiha clan head Fugaku Uchiha, Sasuke grew up in the shadow of his older brother, Itachi Uchiha. Itachi was an acknowledged prodigy who was viewed by the Uchiha clan as a genius, and whose work would further strengthen the bonds between the village and the clan. Sasuke’s father in particular took an active interest in Itachi. Itachi, on the other hand, was rather ambivalent and full of oddly conflicting undercurrents, acknowledging Sasuke by taking interest in his progress as a ninja when even their father did not, but spending little quality time with Sasuke. Even after Sasuke enrolled in the Ninja Academy, he was still unable to escape Itachi’s shadow. Despite consistently scoring at the top of every class, Sasuke failed to receive any recognition from his father, who defined Sasuke’s success only in terms of his older brother. Itachi acknowledged the rivalry Sasuke felt, telling him, “We are brothers. I am the wall you must climb over, so you and I will continue to exist together.”

Itachi’s relationship with his father deteriorated further after Itachi was questioned by other members of the Uchiha clan regarding the apparent suicide of his best friend, Shisui. As Itachi’s behavior became increasingly bizarre, Sasuke’s father began spending more time with Sasuke, and began teaching him the Great Fireball Technique, a common family jutsu seen as a sign of coming of age in the Uchiha clan. After only one week of training, Sasuke (age 7 at the time) performed the jutsu in front of his father, proving himself a genius as well in his own right and finally receiving his father’s recognition. Sasuke’s father told him that he could now proudly wear the clan’s emblem on his back. Forebodingly, Sasuke also received a stern warning not to follow in Itachi’s footsteps.

Shortly thereafter, Itachi massacred every member of the Uchiha clan, sparing only Sasuke, saying that he was not even worth killing. In addition, Itachi told him, “You’ve always wanted to surpass me. That’s why I’m going to let you live… if you wish to kill me, then hate me, despise me… and by all means flee, cling to your wretched life.” Itachi also revealed to Sasuke where the secret meeting place of the Uchiha was hidden, and suggested that Sasuke go there to learn what the true history and purpose of the Sharingan was. Sasuke thought he had fainted after this, but later remembered that he had managed to stand back up, awaken his Sharingan, and pursue Itachi. Upon reaching Itachi, he managed to knock off his forehead protector. Itachi was seen shedding a tear as he was picking up the forehead protector. He then proceeded to incapacitate Sasuke, who awoke in the hospital remembering only that which Itachi wanted him to.

Sōsuke Aizen

Sōsuke Aizen (藍染 惣右介, Aizen Sōsuke) is the former captain of the 5th Division in the Gotei 13, he later leaves Soul Society with his followers, Gin Ichimaru and Kaname Tōsen. His Lieutenant was Momo Hinamori.

During his service he secretly conducted research together with his two accomplices on achieving new heights of power by combining the powers of Shinigami and Hollows. When Ichigo Kurosaki and his friends invade Seireitei to rescue Rukia Kuchiki from execution, he manages to lay hands on the Hōgyoku with an elaborate plan involving Rukia’s execution and the attempts to rescue her, manipulating most of the other captains of Soul Society according to his will. After obtaining the Hōgyoku, he declares his intentions openly.

The principal antagonist of the series, he resides in Hueco Mundo together with Ichimaru and Tōsen, commanding an army of Arrancar and Hollows, his ultimate goal being to overthrow Soul Society along with the Soul King and take his place as god of the world. Currently, the three are at war in Karakura Town.

Appearance

Aizen currently wears clothing similar in style to the Arrancar; he is also seated on a throne, implying that he has some level of political power.

Prior to his departure from Soul Society he appeared as a mild-featured man with brown scholarly hair enhanced by square glasses. He wears the standard Shinigami uniform with a captain’s haori. However, during his ascent to Hueco Mundo, he removes his glasses and swept a hand through his hair, revealing menacing eyes and a very different hairstyle (swept back hair with a strand hanging in his face). As he had previously revealed to Renji Abarai the Aizen they all knew never existed, this would seem to be a visual representation of that claim.

History

Approximately 110 years ago Aizen is seen making his way to the 5th Division living quarters of his captain, Shinji Hirako. He and Shinji have a discussion about style and trends before they make their way to the promotion ceremony being held at the 1st Division headquarters. As they get there he witnesses Hiyori Sarugaki attack his captain and the two get into a childish argument. He wanders behind while the other captains congregate and have a brief discussion on the status of the Gotei 13. Aizen interrupts and then apologizes for it, before asking captain Shunsui Kyōraku about what he meant by promotion, when mentioning that the previous captain of the 12th Division had been promoted. Shunsui forgives him and tells him to speak his mind, Aizen asks what would be a higher position then captain and refers to the possibility of being awarded a place in the Central 46, stating he wasn’t aware of there being any such promotion. Shunsui explains that is has nothing to do with the Central 46 and that the previous 12th Division captain Hikifune has being accepted into the the Zero Division also known as the the Royal Guard, Aizen is left surprised at the revelation.

The following night after Kisuke Urahara’s appointment as the new captain of the 12th Division, Shinji has a short talk with him about how to fall into his new role. While leaving Shinji asks how long do you plan on watching us from over there. Using his hand Shinji reveals Aizen concealed behind some from of camouflage, Aizen tells him he expected nothing less from his captain and asks him when did he realize to which Shinji replies ever since Aizen was in his mothers womb and then tells him to come on.

later the next night Aizen witness Gin Ichimaru killing the 3rd seat of their division and informs him that he is impressed at his skill. Aizen then asks him how did he find the fight to which Gin states he found it pathetic. Aizen notes that wont do at all, giving him the position.

9 years later Shinji and Aizen are walking around the Seireitei when they come across Urahara, Hiyori and 3rd Seat Mayuri Kurotsuchi. While Shinji once again engages in a childish fight and argument with Hiyori, Aizen ask Urahara if he has heard the news to which Urahara tells him he hasn’t. Aizen then informs him about the series of strange deaths having taken place in Rukongai. Shinji stops fighting and fills Urahara in on the details of the situation and how the 9th Division has been sent to handle the investigation.

With the disappearance of the 9th Division, captain-commander Yamamoto calls an emergency meeting and assembles a team to investigate. After coming into contact with hollowfied 9th division members the investigation team is dispatched by an unseen assailant.Aizen is seen wandering around at night by captain Shunsui Kyōraku and some other Shinigami on guard, while the investigation team is still out searching. It is later revealed that 9th Division 5th seat, Kaname Tōsen, was behind the betrayal of the 9th Division having stabbed Kensei Muguruma in the back and killed Kasaki, Shinobu Eishima and Todō Gizaeimon, who were accompanying Kensei. He subsequently subdued the team sent to locate the missing 9th Division members using his Bankai. When captain Shinji Hirako of the 5th Division, asks him why did he betray his captain. He surprised to be answered by his own lieutenant Aizen, who states the Tōsen didn’t betray anyone, because he is very faithful, and he just faithfully followed his orders.

Shinji admits he isn’t as surprised as he lets on and Aizen asks if he suspected him and state that he had expected that much from his captain. Shinji then explains how he knew something was dangerous about Aizen and that he couldn’t be trusted. It was those reasons that Shinji choose him to be his lieutenant so he can keep an eye on him. Aizen tells him that he is grateful as due to his deep seated doubts he didn’t suspect a thing. When Shinji states that he already made it know that he had suspected, Aizen elaborates stating that he didn’t realize that the whole past month, it wasn’t him walking behind him. Aizen then explains the power of his Zanpakutō, Kyōka Suigetsu. He explains to Shinji that perhaps if he was as close to him as other captains are to their lieutenants he may have been able to see through it but he didn’t do that. It was his lack of trust that kept them from getting close and he further explains why he was able to fool Shinji. He also explains that he could have always refused to be Shinji’s lieutenant but decided against that action because his suspicions made the position ideal to carry out his plans. He then goes to personally attack Shinji.

Kisuke Urahara and Tessai Tsukabishi arrive to stop Aizen from dispatching his captain. Aizen and Urahara have a brief discussion about what is transpiring, with Aizen acting innocent at first until Urahara notes that the investigation team doesn’t have simple injuries, but are in fact going through Hollowfication. Aizen commends Urahara on his deduction and reveals himself to be behind the disappearances in the Rukongai. As Aizen has been engaging in early experiments on Shinigami/Hollow hybrids which involved using an unknown device to cause spirits to transform into Hollows. He is responsible for turning his former captain Shinji and seven other Shinigami into Vizards in the first place. Though Aizen refuses to go into any of those details.

Aizen proceeded to leave the scene of the crime with his henchmen, stating that “there’s nothing more to do there”. To stop them from retreating, Tessai performs Hadō #88. “Hiryugekizokushintenraiho” spell against them, only to be countered by Aizen using Bakudō #81. “Danku”, allowing them to escape.

Captain Aizen and Lieutenant Ichimaru.

Some time after Aizen became Captain of the 5th Division and Gin eventually became his lieutenant and right hand man. He and Gin save the surviving young recruits of Shinigami Academy who were out on a field exercise from a group of hollows. From that time he seems to have seen potential in those recruits, Momo Hinamori, Izuru Kira, and Renji Abarai, and took them all into his division. While Kira and Hinamori were obedient and loyal, becoming the Lieutenants of the 3rd and 5th Divisions under Gin and Aizen, respectively, Renji proved to be too rebellious and was transferred to the 11th Division (and later to the 6th, where he too became a Lieutenant).

Gin and Tōsen later became Captains of the 3rd and 9th Divisions, respectively, but remained loyal only to Aizen. According to Aizen, even when Hinamori was his lieutenant, he thought of no one but Gin as his subordinate.

At some point during their captaincy Aizen, Gin and Tōsen, secretly visit Barragan Luisenbarn, King of Hueco Mundo and Lord of Los Noches. He and Barragan engage in a light conversation and he asks Barragan to look at his Zanpakutō, he then asks Barragan if he is happy in his position and if he would join him in a new world where he will be granted more power. Barragan dismisses this notion stating that there is no power higher then his. Aizen then releases his shikai and shows Barragan the decimation of his army and subjugating him in turn. Barragan promises to seek Aizen destruction for all eternity.

Guan Yu/關羽/關雲長

Guan Yu was a general serving under the warlord Liu Bei during the late Eastern Han Dynasty and Three Kingdoms era of China. He played a significant role in the civil war that led to the collapse of the Han Dynasty and the establishment of the Kingdom of Shu, of which Liu Bei was the first emperor.

As one of the best known Chinese historical figures throughout East Asia, Guan Yu’s true life stories have largely given way to fictionalized ones, mostly found in the historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms or passed down the generations, in which his deeds and moral qualities have been lionized.

Guan Yu was deified as early as the Sui Dynasty and is still being worshipped by Chinese people today, especially in southern China. He is respected as the epitome of loyalty and righteousness.

Physical appearance

Guan Yu is traditionally portrayed as a red-faced warrior with a long lush beard. While his beard was indeed mentioned in the Records of Three Kingdoms, the idea of his red face may have derived from a later description of him in Chapter One of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, where the following passage appears:

Liu Bei took a glance at the man, who stood at a height of nine chi, and had a two chilong beard; his face was of the color of a Zao, with red lips; his eyes were like that of a phoenix’s, and his eyebrows resembled silkworms. He had a dignified aura and looked quite majestic.

Life

Early life

Guan Yu was born in the county of Xie (解, a subdistrict of present day Yuncheng, Shanxi). No details of the time of his birth are found in historical records.

Guan Yu fled his hometown at the age of 23 after slaying a local bully named Lü Xiong (呂熊). Five years later, he arrived in Zhuo Commandery (涿郡, present day Zhuozhou, Hebei). He met Liu Bei, who was recruiting volunteers to form a civilian army to counter the Yellow Turbans Rebellion. Together with Zhang Fei, Guan Yu joined Liu Bei and participated actively in fighting the Yellow Turbans in northern China.

For his efforts in putting down the rebellion, Liu Bei was appointed as the Governor of Pingyuan County. Guan Yu and Zhang Fei were also appointed as military officers serving under Liu. According to Records of Three Kingdoms, the relationship of the three men was described to be “as close as brothers”. They slept on the same bed and treated each other like brothers. Guan Yu and Zhang Fei followed Liu Bei most of the time wherever he went and protected him from danger regardless of how perilous the situation was.

Service under Cao Cao

In 200, the warlord Yuan Shao mustered an army of 100,000 in strength and started a campaign against Cao Cao which subsequently culminated in the Battle of Guandu. To ensure a safe crossing of the Yellow River, Yuan sent his general Yan Liang to attack Boma (northeast of present day Huaxian, Henan) as a diversionary tactic. As a counter-tactic, Cao Cao moved his main force westward towards Yan Ford along the River. Yuan Shao withdrew his troops from Baima and Cao Cao’s forces struck back eastward to relieve the siege on Baima. Guan Yu and Zhang Liao led the attack on Yuan Shao’s troops at Baima. Guan Yu slew Yan Liang in the battle and brought back Yan’s severed head.

Guan Yu was conferred the title of Marquis[of Han Shou (漢壽亭侯) by the Emperor Xian in recognition of his efforts. After that, Guan Yu left for Hebei to rejoin Liu Bei, who was currently in Yuan Shao’s camp. He did not take any of Cao Cao’s gifts with him and left behind a farewell letter. Some of Cao Cao’s subordinates wanted to pursue Guan Yu and bring him back but Cao Cao stopped them.

Defeat and death

In 219, Guan Yu attacked the nearby enemy city of Fancheng (樊城, present day Xiangfan, Hubei), which was guarded by Cao Ren, and besieged it. In autumn, heavy showers in the region caused the Han River next to the city to overflow. The flood destroyed reinforcements troops from Cao Cao led by Yu Jin and Pang De. Both Yu and Pang were captured by Guan Yu in battle. However, reinforcements led by Xu Huang managed to force Guan Yu’s troops to retreat.

At that time, Guan Yu realised that Eastern Wu had secretly formed an alliance with Cao Wei and attacked Jingzhou while he was attacking Fancheng. The commanders Mi Fang and Fu Shiren he left in charge of Jingzhou had surrendered to Eastern Wu. When Guan Yu’s troops received news that their families in Jingzhou had fallen into the control of Eastern Wu, some of them started deserting and returning to Jingzhou to reunite with their families.

Guan Yu’s army fell in numbers significantly after several of his troops deserted. Guan attempted to retreat to Bashu in the west but was surrounded and besieged by Eastern Wu forces at Maicheng (麥城, southeast of present day Dangyang, Hubei). Guan Yu attempted to break out of the encirclement together with his son Guan Ping and subordinate Zhao Lei but failed. They were captured in Zhang Town (east of modern day Yuan’an County, Hubei) and executed by Eastern Wu forces after refusing to surrender. Sun Quan sent Guan Yu’s severed head to Cao Cao, who performed the proper funeral rites and buried Guan Yu’s severed head with full honours. Guan Yu was granted the posthumous title of Marquis of Zhuangmou (壯繆侯).

Crossing Five Passes and Slaying Six Generals

Miles (千里走單騎) in the Summer Palace

In Chapter 26, Guan Yu finally received news that Liu Bei was alive and currently in Yuan Shao’s camp. Guan decided to leave Cao Cao together with Liu Bei’s wives to rejoin Liu Bei. Guan Yu attempted to bid Cao Cao farewell in person before his departure but Cao Cao did not give him the chance to do so. Frustrated, Guan Yu eventually wrote a farewell letter to Cao Cao and left. He took with him none of the luxuries and gifts Cao Cao gave him, except the Red Hare. He even gave up his title as Marquis of Han Shou by leaving behind his official seal. Cao Cao’s subordinates felt that Guan Yu behaved far too rudely and arrogantly by leaving without bidding farewell and wanted to pursue him and bring him back. However, Cao Cao knew that no one could stop the determined Guan Yu and he gave orders for the officials along the way to give passage to Guan Yu.

Guan Yu rode beside the carriage carrying his sisters-in-law and escorted them safely all the way. The first pass they reached was Dongling Pass (東嶺關, south of present day Dengfeng, Henan). The guarding officer Kong Xiu refused to allow Guan Yu passage as Guan did not have any official permits with him. Infuriated, Guan Yu killed Kong Xiu and forced his way through the pass.

They reached the city of Luoyang next. The Governor Han Fu led 1,000 men to blockade Guan Yu’s passage. Han’s subordinate Meng Tan challenged Guan Yu to a duel but was sliced into two by Guan. While Guan was fighting with Meng, Han Fu secretly took aim and fired an arrow at Guan Yu. The arrow hit Guan Yu’s arm and wounded him, but Guan Yu drew the arrow from the wound and proceeded to kill Han Fu next. The shocked soldiers immediately gave way and they passed through safely.

Guan Yu’s party arrived at Sishui Pass (汜水關, north of present day Xingyang, Henan). The guarding officer Bian Xi received Guan Yu’s party with a warm welcome and invited Guan to a feast at the temple outside the Pass. In fact, Bian Xi had ordered 200 of his men to lie in ambush inside the temple and kill Guan Yu later. Fortunately, one of the monks called Pujing, who was also from Guan Yu’s hometown, hinted to Guan Yu of the hidden danger. The ambush failed and Guan Yu killed Bian Xi and passed through Sishui Pass.

The Governor of Xingyang, Wang Zhi, adopted a similar scheme to kill Guan Yu. Like Bian Xi, he pretended to be welcoming towards Guan Yu and led Guan Yu’s party to a courier station for them to settle in for the night. After that, Wang ordered his subordinate Hu Ban to lead 1,000 men to surround the station secretly and set fire to it in the middle of the night. Curious to know how the famous Guan Yu looked like, Hu Ban stole a glance at Guan Yu. Guan noticed Hu Ban and invited him into the room. Guan Yu had met Hu’s father earlier and carried a letter with him. He gave the letter to Hu Ban and Hu decided to help Guan Yu after reading his father’s letter. Hu Ban revealed Wang Zhi’s evil plot and opened the city gates secretly for Guan Yu and his party to leave. Wang Zhi caught up a while later but Guan Yu turned back and killed him.

Guan Yu’s party finally arrived at a ferry crossing on the southern bank of the Yellow River. Qin Qi, the officer in charge, refused to allow Guan Yu to cross the river and was killed by an angered Guan Yu. Guan Yu and his party then crossed the river safely and entered Yuan Shao’s domain. However, they soon realised that Liu Bei was no longer in Yuan’s territory and had left for Runan. Guan Yu and his party then made their long journey back and were finally reunited with Liu Bei and Zhang Fei at Gucheng.

Early life and martial arts career

Li was born Li Lianjie in Beijing. Li’s father died when he was two, leaving the family to struggle on its own, with Li being the youngest of two boys and two girls.

When Li was eight his talent for wushu was noticed at a summer course at school, and he began his practice there. Li participated in the sport of wushu in the non-sparring event. He began his wushu on the Beijing Wushu Team, an athletic group organized to perform martial arts forms during the All China Games. As a member of the team, he received wushu training and went on to win fifteen gold medals and one silver medal in Chinese wushu championships. According to Li, once, as a child, when the Chinese National Wushu Team went to perform for President Richard Nixon in the United States, he was asked by Nixon to be his personal bodyguard. Li replied, “I don’t want to protect any individual. When I grow up, I want to defend my one billion Chinese countrymen!” which earned him much respect in his homeland
